I’ve noticed new discomfort in my practice to allow greater intimacy into my life. Intimacy with those I don’t know well has always come easy to me. Intimacy with those I know has seemed more difficult. Intimacy with myself even more difficult. And intimacy with the God of my being more allusive. It has been my practice for the last 8 years to consciously continue my exploration of intimacy. Who might I be if I was willing to stand spiritually naked?

Brene Brown writes “There is no intimacy without vulnerability.” That has certainly been my experience. Each time I deepen in my experience of intimacy I enter unchartered territory. I am called to explore corners of my consciousness previously untraveled. The unknown and the unfamiliar seem scary and yet the more regularly we practice something the greater comfort and proficiency we develop.

So the question is, why? Why intimacy? And why now?

Our spiritual maturation depends on our willingness to be intimate, to be vulnerable. Our spiritual maturation depends on our willingness to be with God, ourself and others when it looks pretty, when it looks messy, when we are broken hearted and when we are powerful. Ernest Holmes writes “Spiritual evolution should make the Infinite not more distant; but more intimate.”

Listen to Rev. Lola Wright kick off our “Intimacy: The Final Frontier” series with her Mother’s Day message, “Communing with Divine Mother.

I have experienced a power greater than my self. I have experienced a power that resides in me and yet is greater than me. It is the paradox of our work. To know we are of Life but we are not the all of Life. In sharing ourselves with another we allow the window of our soul to be opened. In sharing ourselves with another we have the possibility of seeing the Divine as our mirror.

In sharing ourselves with another we have the possibility of seeing the Divine as our mirror.

The whole spirit of Life is seeking to reveal itself all over the place. When we lay down our armor, when we lay down our pretenses, when we lay down our need to be right or to be understood we allow Grace to have its way. We allow the glorious and generous nature of this Universe to flow without obstruction, without inhibition.

Our Centering song this month is “You Move Me” by Typhanie Monique. When I hear “You Move Me,” I am moved into a sensual relationship with the Divine. What does that mean? Sensual? Yes, sensual. Sensual for me means devotion. To be wholly devoted to Love is a vulnerable practice. Would you join me? Join me in diving deeper into the Divine of your being. What I know is the level of intimacy we cultivate within ourselves is a sacred act that serves the greater good. It requires us to wake up more and more and more and more and more.

Invite the God of your being to move you to places you’ve never been before.

“Love is a vulnerable practice.” So true. And it does lead us to unknown places within us. What and opportunity to explore!

  • Reverend Lola,

Thank you for this writing. I gladly join you in exploring intimacy with the divine. Clearly this is freeing as we affirm our oneness. Pure delight awakens a sense of freedom that our planet desperately seems to “need.” Need is a loaded word as it may signify an absence.

God is not absent as you clearly state. Those closest to us join and share a love not previously experienced. It is those who are closest where there seems to be the greatest challenge. This is where love has a unique mission. True love does not make distinctions as guilt and shame do. These come from the human condition where true love must break through. Those closest no longer see my past and I do not see theirs. This is true freedom of mind and body. This freedom heals the mind and body.

The spirit or soul is always free and this soul can now take it place as the soul continues its journey home. This love allows me to serve my soul. Alternatively I can state that God’s Holy Spirit has taken over me as I serve the Holy Spirit.
